Sawteeth, Gothics, Armstrong, Upper Wolfjaw 7/26/13

Maple sausage egg at the corner store and two chocolate chip cookies for breakfast. Plan was to hike Sawteeth. Parked at St. Huberts at 8AM and walked up the road to ausable lake and headed up Sawteeth. Nice waterfall a little way past ausable lake. Cool in the AM and sort of cool once I got up to Sawteeth. Arrived at about 10:30 so decided to keep going to Gothics. Steep hike to top of Pyramid peak. Nice views West from there and good view of Basin? with a lot of slides. Then up to Gothics. Looked at the map and decided to go over Armstrong and Upper Woldjaw before heading down. It was only an extra mile round trip to go over lower wolfjaw but decided it was time to head down. Went down the West River trail which has more waterfalls and runs next to the river for a couple of miles. Nice trail and I stayed on it right to the ausable club so avoided the road past the gate. Ran into people from lower NY state and hiked with them for about 1/2 mile near sawteeth. They were doing the 46 peaks, about 1/2 way through. This was a Ken only trip. A nice one well worth doing again. No camera... a few pics from internet that give you the basic idea...

Giant and Rocky Peak - 12/15/2012

ICY! Up Giant and then over to Rocky Peak and then back up Giant. Clouds in the morning with the high peaks above the clouds. Clouds burned off about half way up Giant. After climbing Giant went down a little to trail going over to Rock Point. Trail is 1.2 miles. How hard can that be? Pretty hard as it turns out. Big down on a trail that was primarily ice. Then up to Rocky, back down, and up to Giant. Interesting view of the cliffs on Giant from Rock Point. Cliffs that can be seen from VT.

Porter and Cascade - 11/24/2012

Left from trail near Cascade lake. Went up Porter first and then Colden. Some ice, about 30 degrees and windy. Winds 30-50 on the top of Cascade? Snowing off and on. Dusting to 1-2 inches of snow on the ground.
Carolyn got injured in the car on the ride back when Roxy jumped over/into her and she hit her head on the car.

Sue didn't wear a hood. Ken took his high school pack. Spikes were good

Bridge resturaunt big food, great fries. Ken lightened up after 2 red wines.

Mt. Colden - 10/27/2012

Started at ADK Loj, went around Avalanche lake to Lake Colden and then up Mt. Colden. Went down by Lake Arnold, then back to Marcy Dam and ADK Loj.
Cloudy day but views of surrounding mountains. Warm day with not much wind at the top of Colden. Trails in good shape with no ice.
Trying to make it back to Robin's house for dinner. Decided we were not going to make it when we got to the top of Colden and called in to cancel.

Eric whined on the way up about how sweet the western trails were- flat, switchbacks, escalators?

Lower Wolfjaw 11/22/2009

This was a fun trip up Lower Wolfjaw. Went up next to a river for the first part of the hike. There was cloud cover up to about 3500 feet. All of the high peaks were visible above the cloud cover. The trail is very steep near the top coming from this side.

Whiteface and Esther 11/15/2009

I have been up Whiteface a number of times. Two times from the hiking trails and two or more times skiing up the auto road when it is closed in the winter. I went up Esther 11/15/09 with Whiteface.
Esther isn't much to write about. Went up the old ski lift path which is fairly rough as I remember. There were some OK views before we started up the Esther path. The top of Esther has no views and is pretty unexciting as ADK peaks go.
Whiteface is always fun. It stands away from most of the high peaks so you get good views of the high peaks and the Lake Placid area. The pictures below are from a few different Whiteface trips.
